In Brief
Outlook 2025+
The global economic outlook brightened somewhat in the second half of 2024 thanks to interest rate cuts in key markets. Global trade could grow again in 2025, if only moderately. At the same time, there are high risks and uncertainties. For instance, the tariff increases announced by the new US president could trigger a new trade dispute. Further shockwaves could proceed if the real estate crisis in China worsens and the conflict in the Middle East escalates. S-GE anticipates the high demand from companies for information and support in the area of export promotion to continue in 2025. In the area of investment promotion, S-GE will continue to focus on global innovation leaders who strengthen Switzerland as a business location long term.

SMEs Will Have to Increasingly Deal with Geopolitical Risks
Foreign demand for internationally active Swiss SMEs is likely to recover slightly in 2025, with individual markets developing at an increasingly uneven rate. High levels of public investment in infrastructure and energy efficiency offer attractive opportunities in individual markets and niches. Against this backdrop, it is extremely important to identify and exploit concrete market opportunities in order to achieve international success. In this context, an ongoing assessment of geopolitical risks is important in order to be able to adapt quickly to new circumstances. The broad spread of company value chains, especially for critical components and raw materials, remains key. At the same time, growing sustainability requirements mean that SMEs will increasingly need to take action.
With this in mind, S-GE’s priorities will focus on the following areas, among others, in 2025:
- Expanding the global and local partner network to promote customized offers and establish sustainability as a competitive advantage
- Driving the digitalization of services and publicizing S-GE offers to support a greater number of SMEs
- Further developing sector-oriented funding activities

Switzerland Remains in Demand as a Business Location – Continued Focus on Innovation Leaders
Geopolitical risks and uncertainties are causing internationally active, innovative foreign companies to rethink their global footprint, although Switzerland remains an attractive location for many companies. Along with the availability of skilled workers, Switzerland’s appeal as a business location can be found in its stability and reliability. At the same time, relations with the EU, which remain unresolved, are increasing the pressure on the location’s attractiveness. Overall, Switzerland should retain its appeal as a business location. S-GE and its partners are focusing their national investment promotion efforts on innovative and value-added locations that will strengthen Switzerland as a location for business and innovation in the long term.
With this in mind, S-GE’s priorities will focus on the following areas, among others, in 2025:
- Expanding the consulting expertise of our global teams to provide target companies with effective support
- Strengthening partnerships to jointly address target companies abroad
- Increasing visibility and impact among foreign target companies through close coordination in digital marketing

S-GE sets clear priorities and maintains a flexible focus on areas in which companies need support. This ensures that we are able to guarantee quality and satisfaction despite high demand.
SME Export Sentiment
Semi-annual Survey of Swiss Companies
Foreign trade plays a key role for the Swiss economy, accounting for over a third of total value creation.
In order to better understand the sentiment and expectations of Swiss SMEs in international business, S-GE has developed an index that depicts export sentiment every six months. The results provide insights into global sales prospects and help to target offers to specific needs. The SME Export Sentiment is published twice a year in a study and dispersed through the media.
