In Brief

Outlook 2026+

US tariff policy had already had a noticeable impact on the global economy at the end of 2025 and could cause a further weakening in 2026. Growth prospects are becoming increasingly different between regions, countries, and sectors. However, uncertainty is set to remain high. These aspects are joined by high macroeconomic risks, such as possible corrections in the stock markets, distortions in the bond markets due to the growing debt of many countries, or an economic slump in the US or China. Regional conflicts, which could lead to disruptions to supply chains, also pose a risk. S-GE anticipates that the high demand from companies for information and support in export promotion will continue in 2026. In investment promotion, S-GE will maintain its focus on global innovation leaders who strengthen Switzerland as a business location long term amid rising location-based competition.

High Uncertainty Requires SMEs to Adapt to Various Scenarios

A further escalation of trade disputes, regional conflicts, or extreme weather events can lead to disruptions in supply chains at any time. This means that strengthening resilience, for example, through diversification, remains of great significance for Swiss SMEs, for example. S-GE will support them with targeted offers. In light of the persistently high tariffs (US) and increasing export controls and sanctions, proper export processing and strategic procurement management are becoming increasingly important. At the same time, various countries and sectors harbor growth opportunities that need to be actively exploited. One way S-GE and its partners will actively support companies is with information on new and existing free trade agreements as well as individual advice.

With this in mind, S-GE will focus on the following areas, among others, in 2026:

  • Further developing the customized range of services for different industries and countries
  • Strengthening global consulting expertise through a competent global network of partners and experts
  • Driving the digitalization of its range of services, in particular through the targeted application of new AI technologies

Stability and Skilled Workers Are Becoming More Important in International Location-based Competition

Rising geopolitical tensions are forcing foreign companies to rethink and redesign their global presence. High political uncertainty is increasing the risk that comes with investment decisions, leading many companies to hold back their investments. Direct investments abroad are becoming increasingly concentrated in high-tech sectors, while traditional industries continue to experience a significant decline. The significance of stability and talent as location factors is growing. Switzerland is well positioned to assume a leading role in reshaping global value chains. However, its relationship with the EU remains unresolved, running the risk of affecting Switzerland’s attractiveness as a business location.

With this in mind, S-GE is setting priorities in the following areas, among others, in 2026:

  • Further developing the range of services tailored to the target companies
  • Applying artificial intelligence in a targeted manner to increase efficiency and effectiveness when approaching customers
  • Enabling the global network to reach its full potential

SME Export Sentiment

Semi-annual Survey of Swiss Companies

Foreign trade plays a key role for the Swiss economy, accounting for over a third of total value creation.

In order to better understand the sentiment and expectations of Swiss SMEs in international business, S-GE has developed an index that depicts export sentiment every six months. The results provide insights into global sales prospects and help to target offers to specific needs. The SME Export Sentiment is published twice a year in a study and dispersed through the media.
